PNGFA Clarifies Key Selection Requirements for National Team Eligibility

The Papua New Guinea Football Association (PNGFA) wishes to clarify the core requirements for player eligibility and selection into the National Teams.

As the governing body for football in the country, PNGFA is committed to ensuring a fair, transparent, and merit-based selection process for all national team call-ups.

To be considered for selection, all players must meet the following key criteria. Players must be actively participating in recognized football competitions sanctioned by PNGFA.

This includes:

• Member Association (MA) competitions across the country; and

• PNGFA National Competitions, including elite leagues and tournaments.

Active participation allows national team selectors to properly assess player performance, fitness, and readiness for international competition. Players are only eligible for consideration when they are consistently competing in these official competitions.

All players are responsible for obtaining and maintaining valid personal identification documents, including:

• National Identification (NID); and

• A valid Passport

PNGFA has noted that several talented players have missed selection opportunities due to the absence of a valid passport or required identification documents. These documents are mandatory for international travel and participation in official competitions sanctioned by FIFA and the Oceania Football Confederation.

PNGFA urges players, parents, and Member Associations to take proactive responsibility in ensuring these requirements are met well in advance of any national team selection process.

Failure to meet these requirements may result in players being deemed ineligible for selection, regardless of their talent or performance level.

PNGFA remains committed to maintaining transparency and fairness in all selection processes, and encourages all stakeholders to support these standards to strengthen football development in Papua New Guinea.

For further information, please contact PNGFA via its official communication channels.
