Kutubu Lakers Thump Giru Souths to Snatch NSBL Title

The Kutubu Lakers dethroned the reigning champions, Giru Souths, with a 51-39 victory in the National Souths Basketball League (NSBL) Women’s Grand Final on Monday, 29th September, 2025, at Taurama Aquatic Indoor Center in Port Moresby.

These two sides met in the 2023 decider and the Mt Hagen-based team proved too strong against the Lakers to claim their first NSBL trophy. Last year’s tournament in Lae ended prematurely, so no winner was announced for both men’s and women’s divisions.

Having a score to settle with Giru, the Lakers came prepared and dominated all four quarters with a resounding victory. Giru showed promising signs throughout the 40-minute battle, but they could not contain the Lakers’ onslaught. 

Inspirational leader and fierce center, Jane Tongia, was causing havoc across the court, backed by reliable finishers, Lydia Gotuno and Lulu. The trio dominated the statistics and helped the Lakers secure the coveted title, with Tongia winning the MVP award.

Interestingly, the Lakers were crowned the Port Moresby Elite Basketball (PEB) champions last month in their rookie season. The Lake Kutubu Queens came with all guns blazing and made their presence felt this year, claiming the PEB competition and NSBL tourney. 

Winning two different competitions in a year has boosted the Lakers, who are now setting their sights on another title shot in the inaugural Clash of the Champions slated for December, with the dates yet to be announced.
