The Basketball Federation of Papua New Guinea President, David Peter, has acknowledged and thanked FIBA Oceania for hosting the High-Performance Camp currently underway on the Gold Coast for the Pacific Island nations.
The high-performance camp on the Gold Coast started on Saturday, 23 May, and will finish on 28 May 2026.
Prior to the trip, the PNG Olympic Committee supported the Team PNG 3x3 women’s squad with testing and trialing for the players at Taurama Aquatic and Indoor Center and Sir John Guise Indoor Stadium.
President Peter said the participation of the PNG 3x3 women’s team in the elite training camp was an important milestone in the federation’s preparations for the upcoming Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.
“The High-Performance Camp is a great initiative by FIBA Oceania that will greatly help our players to improve and enhance their basketball skills, knowledge, discipline, and understanding of the modern game,” Mr. Peter said.
“Our women’s 3x3 team is privileged to be part of this important camp alongside other Pacific nations. This exposure will not only prepare them physically and mentally for international competitions but also help build confidence and experience ahead of the Commonwealth Games.”
Mr. Peter further stated that BFPNG remains committed to creating pathways and opportunities for Papua New Guinea athletes to compete and train at the international level.
“We are grateful to FIBA Oceania for continuing to support basketball development in the Pacific region. These types of programs are very important for emerging basketball nations like Papua New Guinea,” he added.
The PNG 3x3 women’s squad is currently undergoing intensive training sessions, development workshops, and international standard coaching programs during the camp in Australia as part of their long-term preparation program.
Mr. Peter also wished the team well and encouraged the players to represent Papua New Guinea with pride, commitment, and determination throughout the training camp and future international assignments.
Moreover, he said that the final team to represent PNG in the Commonwealth Games will be finalized after the completion of the camp.
