The Gerehu Magpies dominated the Skyroos with a 5.3.32-1.1.7 (32-7) scoreline in the Moni Plus Port Moresby AFL Women’s Grand Final to retain their title on Saturday, 13th September, 2025, at Colts Oval.
The Magpies flexed their muscles in all four quarters of the decider and blew the Skyroos off the field with a comprehensive victory to defend their crown.
The Skyroos started the game strong in the first quarter but lost their momentum, which saw the reigning champions return the favor to take control of the game until the full-time whistle.
Going as favorites, the Gerehu girls lived up to their names and delivered a clinical one-way traffic performance, outmuscling the newcomers and keeping them scoreless in the following 3 quarters.
An emotional and elated Gerehu Magpies’ coach and club owner, Rachael Ravu Talania, expressed that she knew her girls would deliver the result.
“I’m speechless and at a loss for words. The feeling is overwhelming. I raised these girls in Gerehu and mentored them. I had no doubts that the girls would get the job done, and they did. I’m really proud of them,” coach Talania said.
Despite losing to the strong Magpies side, the Skyroos, who entered the competition this season, did well to reach the grand final, with rookie coach Chevalier Ujari crediting his girls for a strong season.
In addition, the POM AFL President Douglas Lai congratulated the Magpies on their back-to-back titles and commended the Skyroos for their spirited fight.
The president also acknowledged the major sponsor of the POM AFL Moni Plus and thanked the fans and families for their support, anticipating a strong season next year.
