Defence returns to POM AFL after nine years

The Defence AFL Club made its return to the Port Moresby AFL competition after a nine-year break, and looks forward to making its mark in the 2026 season.

Defence, one of POM AFL’s foundational clubs in the 1970s and 1980s, left the competition nine years ago due to some circumstances beyond the club’s control.

Komodo Dragon Security Services' sponsorship has boosted Defence's participation in the POM AFL competition this year.

Defence Club President Marcus Kenpol said the club is pleased to rejoin the POM AFL competition for the 2026 season.

“We’ve come back to the POM AFL after a nine-year absence, which is good for the club, the players, and the fans,” Kenpol stated.

“When the boys played in the pre-season, I could see that they competed well and were ready for the challenge this season.

“I’m impressed with their first match against the Lamana Dockers. There’s more work to be done, but I’m happy for the players.”

POM AFL President Douglas Lai commended Defence on their return, including the Taurama Suns.

“It’s good to have Defence back in the competition after nine years, including the Taurama Suns, who were both pioneer clubs in the 70s and 80s,” Lai said.

“Their inclusion shows that our competition is certainly improving as we continue to build and supply talent to the national squad.”

Mr. Kenpol thanked former PNGDF Commander, Peter Ilau, and Komoko Dragon Security Services for their timely sponsorship.

“I acknowledge Mr. Peter Ilau and Komodo Dragon Security Services for their support, including other sponsors,” President Kenpol said.

“They responded very quickly and came on board to sponsor us. Their support has boosted the players’ spirits.”

The men in green will find it challenging to compete for the title, especially after a nine-year hiatus. However, Mr. Kenpol has confidence in his boys to give their best this season.

Defence AFL Club has produced some of the big-name players over the years, many of whom went on to earn national representation through the PNG Mosquitoes.
