Bombers blow out Skyroos

The Port Moresby AFL defending premiers, the Gereka Bombers, made a statement in the opening round after a comprehensive 103-19 victory over Skyroos in the Men’s Premier Division fixture on Saturday, 9 May 2026, at Colts Oval.

With the premiership success still fresh, the Bombers continued their winning momentum in the season opener, immediately imposing their presence and dusting off the cobwebs with a standout performance. 

The Gereka-based club went full steam ahead, delivering a scintillating performance and dominating the hapless Skyroos, who made their debut in the POM AFL competition last season.  

The Bombers manhandled the Skyroos and exerted their dominance in all four quarters, mercilessly blowing the disjointed Skyroos off the park with a commanding performance and sending an early warning to the competition of their premiership pedigree.

Gereka Bombers coach Mek Loi mentioned that he was proud of his men’s performance, but cautioned that there are some teething issues that they need to work on as it’s still an early part of the season.

“It’s good to start the first round of the 2026 season with a strong win. The boys’ commitment and attendance to training have paid off,” Loi said.

“We have recruited new players for this season after some of our boys from last season have switched codes to rugby league and rugby union. 

“There are a few areas we need to tighten up, especially in the backline and the forwards. We need to polish up those two areas in our next game.”

When asked about retaining the title, Mr. Loi confidently responded: “Our aim for this season is to defend our title. It will be awesome if we can go back-to-back.’
