Basketball Federation of PNG Celebrates Landmark 2025

The Basketball Federation of Papua New Guinea (BFPMG) proudly has seen a breakthrough year in 2025, marked by international milestones, regional victories, and strengthened community partnerships that continue to elevate the sport nationwide.

“2025 has been a transformative year for basketball in Papua New Guinea. Our achievements reflect the dedication of our athletes, partners, and communities. We look forward to building on this momentum as we go into 2026 and prepare for the Pacific Games 2027 and beyond,” BFPNG President David Peter said.

Highlights of 2025

Youth Development: PNG’s U23 teams showcased emerging talent at the Mini Games in Palau in June 2025, reinforcing BFPNG’s commitment to future leaders of the sport.

Regional Success: PNG’s men’s team reclaimed gold at the FIBA Melanesian Cup in the Solomon Islands in October 2025, while the women’s team secured silver - both teams qualifying for the 2027 Pacific Games.

Community Impact: Active participation in the Walk Against Violence and the Safe Sport Network, promoting equality and safeguarding in sport.

Next year, BFPNG has a couple of international tournaments coming up, including Asia 3x3 in Singapore and Women's 3x3 Olympic Games in Glasgow.

The federation will be embarking on transforming its functions to separate commercial and regulatory aspects to bring productivity and efficiency to its operations.

“We will be working with stakeholders to provide SME and FODE opportunities for our players and officials,” President Peter said.

“Basketball is more than competition - it’s a platform for unity, pride, and opportunity. Every milestone this year shows how sport can inspire youth and strengthen our national identity.”

The Basketball Federation of Papua New Guinea (BFPNG) made historic debuts, tasted regional triumphs, and strengthened partnerships in 2025, while setting momentum toward the Pacific Games in 2027.
