The Aspley Hornets FC announced the signing of Papua New Guinea’s booming Australian Rules Football League star, Martin Antiko.
Hailing from Goroka in the Eastern Highlands Province, Antiko started playing AFL at the age of 13. His elder brothers inspired him to play the Australians’ dominant sport.
Antiko began playing with the Bomana Cats in the Port Moresby AFL competition from 2015 to 2020. In 2021, he joined the University Tigers and won 2 premierships in the reserve grade from 2023 to 2024.
The 23-year-old was over the moon when the Aspley Hornets FC revealed that the club would secure the service of the budding AFL talent.
“I was speechless when I received the news. It feels unreal. I can’t honestly explain how I feel, and put them into words. I’m blessed and honored to be signed by Aspley Hornets FC,” he expressed.
Aspley Hornet FC released a statement regarding Antiko’s signing, stating: “Martin joins us after captaining the University Tigers and guiding them to premiership success.
“A powerful presence in the midfield, Martin brings strength, tenacity, and leadership to the Hornets. We can’t wait to see him in action in 2026.”
The Eastern Highlander left school to concentrate on his AFL career. Though he took a risk by forgoing his education, his decision has paid off with an overseas contract.
Antiko said he would give his best and learn as much as possible to hone his skills and elevate his game, making his intention clear to play in the premier Toyota AFL Cup in the future.
The Aspley Hornets FC’s senior men's team competes in the Queensland Australian Football League (QAFL), the highest level of community competition.
