The North Queensland Cowboys’ booming center Zac Laybutt is eager to play in the second week of the Pacific Bowl Championship series when the PNG Kumuls take on the Cook Islands Aitu on Saturday, 25th October 2025, at Santos National Football Stadium in Port Moresby.
Laybutt had a breakout season in 2023, where he made his NRL debut for the North Queensland Cowboys and later made his first appearance for the PNG Kumuls in the Prime Minister’s XIII match, as well as the inaugural Pacific Championships that same year.
Despite flourishing in his NRL career, Laybutt suffered an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury in 2024 and missed the rest of the season. After his rehabilitation, he hit the paddock this year and played 14 games for the Cowboys, ending his season on a good note and raring to play his fourth Test match for the Kumuls.
The Bundaberg man mentioned that he was happy to don the red, black, and gold colors again, giving an update on the team’s preparations, the warm hospitality of the die-hard fans, and his individual focus against the Cook Islanders.
“The preparations have been good. I missed last year’s Pacific Championships, but being back in the camp is awesome, and I love being in this country. It will be a good contest against the Cook Islands. We just have to go out there and play our own game,” he said.
The rising star said during his lowest moments, especially during the ACL injury last season, his elder brother and former Kumul Kyle Laybutt had been beside him, including his supportive family, sharing the close bond he has with Kyle.
Laybutt will be partnering with his Cowboys teammate Robert Derby on the left edge, saying it was good to bring their combination from the NRL to the representative level and build on that experience to make PNG proud.
Zac Laybutt stated that it was encouraging to see young players getting the opportunity to play for the Kumuls and experience the level of international competition. He looks forward to playing alongside the debutants and the seasoned campaigners tomorrow.
