Bal Numapo’s son impresses in Amazing Round

Former PNG Kumuls legend, Bal Numapo’s son Jayden Numapo, produced a standout performance and helped the Kandes RLC defeat the Mendi Muruks in Round 9 of the Digicel-ExxonMobil Cup Amazing Round on Saturday, 6 June 2026, at Santos National Football Stadium. 

He scored 2 tries, amassed over 100 meters, made a few tackle busts, defended resolutely, and walked away with the Man-of-the-Match honors, playing a pivotal role in the Kandes' surge to the top of the ladder with 14 points. 

Jayden said it was his first time playing at PNG’s spiritual rugby league home ground: “It was my first time playing at the Santos National Football Stadium. The atmosphere here was quite different than other centers I have played this year.

“It was my first time and the Kandes’ first trip to Port Moresby to play at Santos National Football Stadium. I looked forward to playing this match against the Muruks, and I’m really excited that we got the win.”

The Simbu-Ialibu kid revealed his goal at the end of this season: “My short-term goal is being consistent throughout the season and earn a spot in the PNG Hunters, and my long-term goal is to play for the PNG Chiefs in the NRL.”

He said just because he is the son of the late Bal Numapo, that doesn’t guarantee him instant success: “It’s an honor to carry my father’s name, who was a household name in PNG, but I have to work extra hard to honor his legacy and make a name for myself.”

He played for the EFM Kamkumung Crushers in the Lae League and won the grand final last year. He was scouted by the Kandes in the off-season, making his debut for the rookie club this year and cementing his spot in the center position. 

Coming from a rugby league family and having the surname of the great Bal Numapo, Jayden has a big shoe to fill, challenging himself to carry his father’s legacy while carving his own path in the country’s top-flight domestic competition.
