Dabaris crowned NYC Premiers

The Central Dabaris secured the Men’s Under 19 National Youth Competition (NYC) after defeating the Port Moresby Vipers with a 24-19 scoreline on Sunday, 6 June 2026, at Santos National Football Stadium.

The Port Moresby-based academies have had strong campaigns in the two-month National Youth Competition, imposing their presence and reaching the grand final to battle for supremacy. 

Dabaris and Vipers fielded talented players, making the decider a thrilling contest as the Central boys and the NCD lads competed in a highly entertaining and physical match that capped off in a grandstand finish. 

With the bragging rights on the line, the two sides rose to the challenge and left everything on the pitch, with the Vipers taking a 10-8 lead over the Dabaris at half-time and setting the tone for a bruising second stanza. 

The game opened up in the second half, with both sides scoring 2 and 3 tries, respectively. The Vipers were leading the contest 19-18. However, the Dabaris scored a match-winning try in the shadows of full-time to steal the victory. 

The junior curtain-raiser decider set the stage for the Digicel-ExxonMobil Cup (DEM Cup) "Amazing Round" rugby league spectacle, with all six matches being hosted on Saturday and Sunday (6-7 June) in Port Moresby. 

PNG Rugby Football League Chief Executive Officer, Stanley Hondina, said the inclusion of the National Youth Competition grand final during the Amazing Round highlighted the importance of the youth development pathway.

"Many of these players have come through the PNGRFL Academy and National Youth Competition pathway, where they have been exposed to a structured development program designed to help them grow as athletes and individuals,” Hondina said.  

“The grand final is an opportunity for them to demonstrate the skills, discipline, and commitment they have developed throughout that process.

"The National Youth Competition plays a critical role in developing the next generation of rugby league players. 

“By staging the grand final during the Amazing Round, we have created opportunities for these young athletes to experience a premier rugby league event and showcase their talent in front of a national audience.

"The pathway from junior rugby league through to the Digicel-ExxonMobil Cup and beyond is an important part of our game. 

“Events like this demonstrate the opportunities available to young players who are committed to developing their skills and pursuing their rugby league aspirations."

The PNGRFL boss congratulated the Central Dabaris on claiming the 2026 NYC and commended the Port Moresby Vipers for putting up a spirited fight. He also acknowledged the sponsors, match officials, coaching staff, team management, and the fans for their support.
