Twenty-two teams have been locked in as the 2024-25 Women's Conference Soccer League kicks off in the four regions of Papua New Guinea.
PNG Football Association President, John Kapi-Natto made this official earlier this week ahead of round one kickoff on Thursday, December 5th, in Port Moresby (Southern), Mt Hagen (Highlands), Lae (Northern), and Buka (NGI Eastern).
“We are excited to see the women’s competition kicking off and will be hosted in different conferences. This is in line with our calendar for events within the Oceania region,” President Natto said.
“The winner of this WCSL competition will represent PNG in the 2025 Oceania Football Confederation (OFC) Women's Champions League championship in Tahiti in May.”
He said this would be followed by the OFC Nations Cup in July in Fiji, hence the competition was launched late in the year.
Meanwhile, the Southern Conference has six teams - Hekari United FC, POM Souths, PRK Mungkas, Tarangau and Bernice FC, while NGI Eastern has confirmed six teams as well - Kiara FC, Hamatana, Buka Atolls, Wantoks, Central Bougainville and North Bougainville FC.
Both Northern and Highlands have confirmed five teams each, with one team to sit out games on bye per round. Northern teams include Bara FC, FC Morobe Wawens, Lae City Dwellers, Sambio United, and Morobe Tulips FC, while Highlands include Wabag Mommers FC, Mendi SHP, Hagen Kuri, Mt Hagen, and Simbu Ambai FC.
The competitions will be played at the PNG Football Stadium (POM), Lae Football Academy Oval (Lae), Kimininga Police Barracks Oval (Mt. Hagen), and Hutjena Oval in Buka.
“We have the Conference League format with double round robin - 10 rounds with 104 matches played for the next two months. The first round ends on Dec 21 for the festive period and will resume on January 11 in 2025,” Natto explained.
The Women’s Conference Soccer League is expected to wrap up the four regional competitions with finals set for Feb 1-8, 2025.
