The Hekari United FC opened their campaign with a 3-0 statement win over Madang United FC in Round 1 of the Premier Soccer League (PSL) on Sunday, 31 May 2026, at PNG Football Stadium in Port Moresby.
The goals were hard to come by in the opening 20 minutes, although a few chances were created for both sides. After the water break, Hekari realigned their attack and broke Madang’s defence, with Fabian Kataka scoring the opening goal and leading 1-0 at half-time.
After the breather, Hekari went on an attacking raid, putting the visitors under immense pressure. With a lion’s share of possession, the "Red Army” netted their second goal through Jeff Teika, and Tony Waiwe scored again, humbling the newcomers in Port Moresby’s sweltering heat.
Hekari’s backline has been bolstered with the return of former stalwarts, including captain Daniel Joe and Solomon Rani, as well as the club’s emerging talent coming through its development pathway and a few players from rival clubs.
Finishing fourth last season due to senior players joining PNG Hekari FC in the inaugural OFC Pro League, this had a toll on the team’s overall performance. Known as a regular finals contender for over a decade, Hekari aims to return to its rightful place this season.
The MRDC-sponsored franchise will go head-to-head with the Port Moresby Strikers in Round 2 of the Premier Soccer League’s local derby blockbuster on Wednesday, 3 June 2026, at PNG Football Stadium. Kick off at 3:00 PM.
