The Papua New Guinea Football Association-sanctioned Premier Soccer League (PSL) has officially launched its 20th season on Thursday night, May 28th, at the Hilton Hotel in Port Moresby.
This year marks a significant milestone for the Premier Soccer League, with the semi-professional competition hosting 12 clubs for the first time since the National Soccer League’s inception in 2006.
Twelve teams have confirmed their participation for this season, including Hekari United FC, Gulf Komara FC, Lae City FC, Port Moresby Strikers, Morobe Wawens, Admiralty Islands FC, Kula FC, Madang FC, Wawa FC, NCD FC, United Highlands FC, and Lae City Dwellers.
Three new clubs have joined the PSL season 2026, comprising Madang FC, Wawa FC, and NCD FC, while nine clubs were last year’s participants. Star Mountain FC and Blue Kumuls FC exited the competition this year.
PNGFA President John Kapi Natto thanked the sponsors, partners, the participating clubs, players, and former Socceroos captain and 34th SP Sports Awards Guest Speaker Paul Wade and his wife.
“I would like to acknowledge the sponsors of the clubs that are participating this season, the business houses, club managers, club management and officials, coaches, the players, and the fans,” Kapi Natto said.
“I also acknowledge our Guest of Honor, Paul Wade, and his beloved wife, who are with us. Wade will be the Guest Speaker of the 34th SP Sports Awards. Thank you to Paul and his wife for their presence tonight.”
He also recognized the role of the technical officials, medical teams, the media, and the fans for their support.
Remarkably, President Kapi Natto explained that the semi-professional competition had run for two decades. This year marks its 20th anniversary.
“This year marks 20 years of our elite national competition in Papua New Guinea, and we have seen it grow from strength to strength," he stated.
“I remember I was one of the people who started the National Soccer League (NSL) in 2006. That’s 20 years ago.
“Clubs, managers, officials, and players have come and gone in the last 20 years, but the league must continue. That’s something I can not hold. People can come and go, but football must live on.
“This season will feature 12 clubs for the first time in 20 years of our competition. That is amazing, growing from 5 clubs to 12 clubs. This is a powerful statement demonstrating the growth, unity, and belief in the future of our beautiful game.”
Despite not having any naming rights sponsor for this season, President Kapi Natto thanked FIFA for its consistent support, ensuring that the competition continues to run. He hopes that some sponsors will come on board during the season.
Mr. Kapi Natto expressed disappointment, unapologetically saying that rugby league had received more support than soccer and other codes, and challenged the government to be fair to every sport across the country.
The PNGFA boss wished the 12 participating clubs good luck and looked forward to delivering another competitive, memorable, and exciting Premier Soccer League season 2026.
Meanwhile, the PSL Round 1 kicks off this weekend in Lae and Port Moresby, respectively.
