Themis Spartans become pioneer Champions of Luluaki Cup

SOL Themis Spartans defeated the SOL Brothers with a 10-0 full-time score in the first-ever Prof. John Luluaki Cup, during the curtain-raiser match of the University Papua New Guinea Rugby Football League (UPNGRFL) Competition Grand Final match on Sunday, 1st October, 2023, at the VC Oval.

Prof. John Luluaki Cup is a tribute match that has just been inducted into the UPNGRFL in memory of the Late Prof. John Luluaki, one of UPNG’s longest-serving lecturers in the School of Law. Prof. Luluaki had served UPNG for 44 years before his passing earlier this year.

Late Prof. Luluaki’s surviving family was invited to kick off the program and present awards after the game.

Mrs. Luluaki said it was an honor to be part of the program. She went on to thank the School of Law for the heartwarming initiative.

“It was an honor to be part of the program. My late husband served 44 years in UPNG; it was his only job. We all grew old here so it was really an honor to be here to witness this.” said Mrs. Luluaki.

UPNGRFL and the School of Law representatives thanked the late Luluaki's family for attending the event and also the current law students and alumni for contributing and making the tribute match a success.

Furthermore, UPNGRFL announced that the Prof Luluaki Cup would happen every year. SOL Themis Spartans and SOL Brothers are the two teams from the School of Law that would be playing against each other every year.
