Sparrows dominate Telstars to meet Veupunama in POM Netball Association Grand Final

ree

The Credit Corporation Sparrows put on a clinical performance against the Enviro Telstars, securing a dominant 56-30 win in the Port Moresby Netball Association (POMNA) Premier Division Semi-final showdown on Saturday, August 2nd, 2025, at Rita Flynn Court.

Sparrows and Telstars have been the heavyweights of POMNA for over two decades, dominating the city competition and winning championships. Sparrows, in particular, have been the back-to-back champions (2023-2024) and are aiming for their third straight title.

The Credit Corporation-sponsored Sparrows have had an outstanding 2025 campaign, losing only one game in the regular season at the hands of the Haidana Lightning and topping the ladder in the premier division the whole season.

With everything to play for in a do-or-die clash against the Telstars, the reigning champions (Sparrows) put their feet down and flexed their muscles, dominating the match from the first quarter to the final quarter and blowing out the hapless Telstars off the court.

Sparrows' coach Julienne Leka was impressed with her team’s amazing performance, saying: “The girls learnt a hard lesson last weekend when we lost to Veupunama by 8 points. We put in a lot of work in the last five days to fix our mistakes and delivered a dominant performance against the Telstars.

“The girls said they needed to go to the grand final with this one last chance, and I told them that it was up to them to make it happen. I think it was a bit of motivation that drove the girls to play really well.

“Since we were winning games throughout the season, I think we needed to lose to let the girls work a little harder, and they have worked hard to deliver a strong performance. The result today spoke for itself.”

Coach Leka mentioned that they had a score to settle against Veupunama, who defeated them in the grand final qualifier last weekend. The coach wanted her girls to improve their defence because offensively, they have strike weapons across the court.

With redemption beckoning for the Julienne Leka-coached Credit Corporation Sparrows, the women in pink are eager to exact revenge on Veupunama in the 2025 POMNA decider to claim their third consecutive title this weekend.
