The PNG Sports Foundation (PNGSF) overcame the National Fisheries Authority (NFA) with a hard-fought 35-34 victory in the Public Servants Netball Association (PSNA) Premier Division Semifinal on Saturday, 14 February 2026, at Rita Flynn Courts.
The match started with high intensity as PNGSF and NFA strategized to assert their dominance. PNGSF led the opening quarter with a 9-6 scoreline and maintained their lead in the second quarter, leaving the half-time score at 17-15.
The PNGSF women continued their ascendency in the third quarter, extending the lead to 24-21. The eventual winners dominated all four quarters, tightening their grip in the final quarter and holding off the fast-finishing NFA outfit to a one-point thrilling contest.
PNGSF captain Hannah Singut said they did not have a strong season, but the team found their rhythm in the playoffs, expressing satisfaction and crediting the players for stepping up when it mattered the most.
“I’m proud of the girls. Despite a very slow start to the season, we regrouped in the middle of the season to reach the finals. We beat NFA in round 2, and it’s not surprising that we defeated them again. I’m proud of the girls for sticking to our game plan,” she stated.
Singut added that though some of the players who were instrumental in the team’s run to the finals did not turn up for the game, they rotated the players and gave a chance to a few emerging talents who rose to the challenge and delivered the result.
She also acknowledged the strong leadership of the team's co-captain, Athalia Kila, including the mentorship of veteran netballers Gloria Laka and former Pepe, Evanelliah Aua. The experience of these women held the team together.
Meanwhile, in the top of the table Grand Final qualifier, the Internal Revenue Commission team 1 edged out the reigning champions BPNG with a 21-20 grandstand finish. Fortunately, BPNG have one more chance to redeem themselves.
PNGSF were the 2023-2024 premiers. However, the National Housing Corporation beat PNGSF in the quarterfinals last year. The Singut-Kila captained side hope to make amends and reclaim their lost title this season.
The custodians of sports in Papua New Guinea (PNGSF) will meet BPNG in the PSNA Preliminary Final on Saturday, February 21st. The winner faces the tax collectors (IRC) in the big dance the following weekend.
