PNG international and experienced soccer player, Tommy Semmy, has signed a one-year contract with the Geelong SC, a Victorian team taking part in the Victoria Premier League 2 in Australia.
The Victoria Premier League 2 (VPL2) is a second-tier Australian football competition based in Victoria, which was established in 1908 and is administered by Football Victoria.
Semmy started his football career in 2013 with Besta United in the National Soccer League (NSL) and two years later (2015), he joined the Hekari United FC.
The following year (2016), he moved over to the Solomon Islands to play for the Marist FC in the Solomon Islands S-League.
He left Marist FC and joined the Malaita Kingz FC in 2017 and won the Golden Boot Award that year, with 17 goals under his belt.
After a one-year stint with Malaita Kingz FC, he furthered his blossoming career abroad, joining the Hamilton Wanderers FC in New Zealand.
The 30-year-old played with the Hamilton Wanderers for five seasons and moved over to Australia in 2021, joining forces with Werribee City FC.
In 2022, he switched to the Altona Magic SC. While playing for the Magic, he was loaned to play for the Dandenong City before moving back to the club (Altona Magic).
The Morobean native last played for the Melbourne Knights, where his contract lapsed last year (2024) and Geelong took him on board.
During his ten-plus years career, he has represented PNG on 16 occasions and won a couple of titles, becoming one of the mainstays in the national team (Kapuls).
The Geelong SC announced that they were happy to have the service of Semmy in their 2025 campaign, who brings experience and flair to the squad.
Semmy mentioned that he was pleased to join the Geelong SC to give his best for the Victorian franchise this season. Veteran talisman, Raymond Gunemba also had a stint with Geelong in 2018.
“It’s exciting to sign a contract with the club you know. Great feeling at all, and it’s important because the Geelong SC is the biggest club in Geelong,” he said.
Transitioning from one country to another has its challenges, but Semmy said it was easy for him to acclimatize and adapt quickly, hoping to bring success to the club.
“Football is a simple game and it’s all about individuals trying to adjust and focus more on little details,” Semmy revealed.
“I guess the standard is up there from where I played in New Zealand. I learned different things in Victoria than in New Zealand.
“I’m trying to help the team/club achieve success at the end of the year. I’m here to win and not to lose.”
