POM Harlequins Rugby Union Club Talent Bound for Malaysia in Elite Sporting Exchange

ree

The Port Moresby Harlequins Rugby Union Club proudly announced today (7th August) an international placement of its three backline players, one forward, and one strength & conditioning coach to Malaysia, marking a major milestone in the club’s commitment to high-performance development and international exposure.

This opportunity is the result of a formal collaboration agreement with the Armed Forces Rugby Union Club, reinforcing POM Harlequins’ long-term vision to create structured pathways for emerging players to gain international experience, sharpen their skills, and represent PNG on the bigger stages. The partnership provides a platform for selected players to compete in Malaysia’s elite domestic competitions and benefit from a professional rugby environment.

The Agong Cup is one of Malaysia’s most prestigious national rugby union tournaments, named in honor of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong (King of Malaysia). It features top-tier teams from across the country competing in a high-intensity format that showcases the best of Malaysia rugby. The tournament is known for its competitive standard, strong community support, and role in developing regional rugby excellence.

This placement is made possible through the ‘Go Rural to Go Global’ (GRtGG) initiative by the PNG Sports Foundation, which at the time intended to champion inclusive pathways for athletes from all backgrounds. The club also acknowledges the support of corporate partners whose contributions enabled the Harlequins’ participation in the 2023 and 2024 COBRA 10s, with preparations underway for its third appearance at the 52nd COBRA 10s in November 2025.

While congratulating the players, including the strength & conditioning coach, Harlequins’ head coach Billy Rapilla said: “This partnership is about more than just competition - it’s about creating real opportunities for our players to grow, lead, and inspire. We are proud to see our talent take this next step.

“We are really proud to announce today that the club in its sporting exchange placement has selected three backline players, one forward, and one strength & conditioning coach to Malaysia. Our vision is to develop the players and take our club to greater heights. It’s a strategic pathway for our emerging talent and an opportunity to collaborate with the Armed Forces Rugby Union Club.”

The selected players, plus the coach, will arrive in Kuala Lumpur on 11 August 2025, ahead of the 41st edition of the Agong Cup, which is scheduled to run from late August through to the end of October. This extended competition window supports state-level participation and progressive rounds leading to the national finals.
