The Papua New Guinea National Women’s Football Team wrapped up their 2025 Oceania Football Confederation (OFC) Women’s Nations Cup campaign on a high note in Fiji.
PNG had a strong outing in the recently concluded tournament, winning all their pool matches and registering a draw. They went to the grand final but went down to the Solomon Islands in a hard-fought battle.
The team arrived in Port Moresby on Wednesday, July 23rd, with coach Erickson Komeng saying: “We started the tournament slowly but finished on a high note. Unfortunately, the result did not come our way, but the girls did well throughout and got some of the awards (Golden Boot & Player of the Tournament) at the end.”
Since PNG topped the table in their pool, they are automatically qualified to host games in Port Moresby for the upcoming Melanesian Cup scheduled in November later this year.
“We have the Melanesian Cup around November. The players will go back to their respective clubs and prepare for the Women’s Conference Soccer League (WCSL) and at the same time, train for the upcoming tournament,” Komeng explained.
Coach Komeng also acknowledged the Papua New Guinea Football Association under the leadership of President John Kapi Natto, the coaching staff, team management and fans, whose support pushed the players to give their best and represent the country with pride.
The current national women’s squad has a mix of youth and experience, who are still learning to build combinations and gel as a team, in anticipation of giving other countries a run for their money in the Melanesian Cup.
