PNG Olympic Committee Marks 64 Years of Sporting Excellence

The Papua New Guinea Olympic Committee (PNGOC) proudly marked its 64th Anniversary on the 2nd of August, 2025, celebrating over six decades of dedication to the development of elite athletes and the advancement of sports in Papua New  Guinea. 

Established in 1961 as the British Empire and Commonwealth Games Association,  the PNGOC has transformed over the years, evolving from a small group of passionate volunteers into a professional and strategic organization driving national representation on the global sporting stage. 

From securing International Olympic Committee (IOC) recognition in 1974 to playing host to the South Pacific Games in 1991, PNGOC’s legacy is built on commitment, growth, and national pride. 

Reflecting on this milestone, PNGOC President Emma Waiwai acknowledged the tireless efforts of those who shaped the organization’s journey. 

“This celebration is not just about our past, it’s about recognizing the incredible individuals who built this foundation and looking boldly toward the future,” said Waiwai

“PNGOC remains committed to driving elite performance, promoting values-based sports, and  inspiring the next generation of Papua New Guineans through sports.” 

This year’s anniversary comes on the heels of another landmark achievement: the official launch of PNGOC’s 2025–2032 Strategic Plan titled “2032 POWERED BY PURPOSE.” Unveiled at its Annual General Assembly in June, the strategy charts an ambitious course leading up to the Brisbane 2032 Olympic Games. 

The plan outlines four strategic priorities: Strengthen, Perform, Deliver, and Host,  underpinned by athlete-centered, simplified, and focused principles. It signals  PNGOC’s intent to not only support world-class athlete performance but also deliver broader community impact through sports and development. 

With a strengthened Secretariat, a legacy of successful international participation, and a clear path forward, PNGOC is poised to write its next chapter, one of sustained sporting success, national pride, and purpose-driven impact.
