The newly established Basketball National Referees Association (BNRA), under the leadership of President Charles Morola, successfully delivered a two-day referee training at the Taurama Aquatic Indoor Centre from 8–9 September 2025, in Port Moresby.
This initiative brought together new and seasoned officials for a dynamic blend of classroom instruction and on-court practice aimed at enhancing delivery style, technical mastery, and professional discipline.
Mr. Morola said: “Referees must be on top of their game. The sport is highly technical, and there’s no room for emotional reactions. Time management is a challenge we must continue to improve on.”
He also emphasized the importance of studying the FIBA Referee Manual and committing to continuous learning, adding: “Practice makes perfect.”
The training highlighted the evolving landscape of officiating in Papua New Guinea, with Mr. Morola expressing pride in the emerging generation of referees—including trailblazing women like Betty Angula and Marca Muri—whose dedication signals a promising future for inclusive, high-standard officiating.
Mentors such as Mr. Ronnie Mea, Slieve Mohu, and Ishmeal Kekeao from Lae also joined the sessions, reinforcing the collaborative spirit and shared commitment to excellence.
Each day began with classroom sessions and transitioned into practical court application, ensuring referees were equipped both mentally and physically.
The National Referees Association, established earlier this year under the Basketball Federation of PNG, is led by:
President - Mr. Charles Morola
Vice President - Mr. Peter Mendi Mope
Treasurer - Ms. Lucy Abel
Secretary - Ms. Anna Mope
Since taking office, Mr. Morola has proactively delivered referee development sessions across the country, including Mt. Hagen, Aiyura Valley, and Madang. These efforts reflect the association’s mission to lift the quality of the game and regulate competitions to FIBA standards.
“This is only the first step in the right direction. We still have a lot of work to do, but with commitment and collaboration, we’ll get there,” Mr. Morola stated.
