PNG Lewas claim first victory against Japan in ICC Women’s T20 World Cup EAP Qualifier

The Papua New Guinea Women’s Cricket Team, the PNG Lewas, opened their ICC Women’s T20 World Cup East Asia Pacific Qualifier campaign in tough competition with a 45-run victory over Japan today (9th September) at Albert Park 2, Suva.
Batting first, PNG posted a competitive 139/4 in 20 overs. Japan fought hard in reply but were bowled out for 94 runs in 19.5 overs, giving PNG their first win of the tournament.
Japan’s innings saw opener Haruna Iwasaki provide strong resistance with a quickfire 31 runs from 17 balls, including four boundaries and a six, but PNG’s disciplined bowling attack kept the pressure on.
Isabel Toua starred with the ball, taking 3 wickets for just 8 runs in 3.5 overs, while Geua Tom picked up 2/23 from 4 overs. Mairi Tom (1/15) and Pauke Siaka (1/4) also chipped in with crucial breakthroughs.
Konio Oala took out the player of the match with an impressive performance of 50 (39).
PNG fielders were sharp, with three run outs showing the team’s determination on the field. Japan’s innings eventually closed at 94 all out, handing PNG a solid win to kick off their qualifiers campaign.
PNG Lewas Captain Brenda Tau praised her team’s effort and acknowledged the competitive spirit of their opponents.
“It was a tough and competitive match against Japan, and we thank them for giving us a good challenge,” Tau said.
"For our PNG Lewas, I am very proud of how the team played today, especially our bowlers, who kept their composure and executed well.
“We are looking forward to our next match and hope to carry our flag and our country high until the qualifiers end.”
The Cricket PNG Board congratulated the Lewas on a great start to the tournament.
The PNG Lewas will now shift their focus to the upcoming fixtures in the Qualifier, determined to continue their winning momentum and secure a spot at the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup.
