The PNG women’s team etched their names into the history books after thumping Fiji with a convincing 3-0 win in the first-ever Women’s Melanesian Spearhead Group Prime Minister’s Cup Grand Final on Sunday, 23rd November 2025, at Sir John Guise Stadium, Port Moresby.
Heading to the crunch match as clear favorites, PNG did not disappoint and imposed their presence in the 90-minute contest, living up to the expectations and walking away with the inaugural title, despite the drenched pitch.
Though the bad weather affected the two teams to execute their respective game plans, PNG managed to hit the scoreboard after Grace Batiy was fouled in the penalty box, and goal-scoring sensation Marie Kaipu nailed the free kick, giving the home side a 1-0 lead at the interval.
The newly crowned ‘Melanesian Queens’ maintained their attacking rhythm in the second half, with the inspirational team leader and midfielder Ramona Padio registering the second goal and potent flanker Michaelyn Butubu adding the third goal to seal the deal.
PNG women’s coach Erickson Komeng heaped praise on the team, crediting the players for being consistent and unbeaten throughout the two-week tournament to scoop the first-ever women’s MSG PM’s Cup on home soil.
“It was a quality performance from the girls. It shows how good the team is, including the quality of football they play and their experience. They did very well, and I’m so proud of them,” Komeng said.
Coach Komeng acknowledged the Government, the Host Organizing Committee, PNG Football Association, and the fans for their support in pulling off a successful MSG PM’s Cup 2025.
