The Papua New Guinea elite men’s and women’s boxers shone at the recently concluded Oceania Boxing Championships held in Tahiti after winning 9 medals from 9 fighters and proudly representing the country on the regional stage.
Following months of tireless and rigorous preparations, the 9 determined fighters went to Tahiti and stole the show, which saw 4 boxers claim Gold, 3 walk away with Silver, and 2 receive Bronze medals.
John Ume, one of the gold medalists, who recently turned into a professional fighter, said: “That sums up the elite men’s and women’s Oceania Boxing Championships for Team PNG with a total of 9 medals from 9 boxers. We came and delivered.
“Thank you, PNG Boxing Union President Dr. Gideon Kendino and the management, including the coaching staff and Team PNG boxers. All the hard work has paid off. I am so proud of you all and wish you well in your future endeavors.”
PNG Boxing Union (PNGBU) President Dr. Gideon Kendino praised the 9 fighters for their phenomenal performances and thanked the sponsors, the coaching staff, and his executive team for their support.
Despite limited backing in terms of funding allocation, boxing is one of the thriving codes in PNG that has continued to produce positive outcomes and put the country in the spotlight.
