PNG Kickboxing Team performs well at International Event

Three fighters from the PNG Kickboxing Federation's Development Program, featuring Brendan Simbani, Clinton Hanku, and Kingston David, delivered outstanding performances in their professional fights on Saturday, 14 February 2026, at Melbourne Pavilion, Australia.

The results came in 1x draw and 2x losses in close contests. The most anticipated professional kickboxing event featured participants from the USA, China, Australia, New Zealand, and PNG, placing PNG in a significant spot, losing on points, and recording a draw.

Brendan, who had his last crack in the amateur level for the international WKA Junior Welterweight Title, finished on a high from the starting round to the finishing round of the 2x4 round contest.

Young Brendan did not give his opponent an easy fight in claiming the title for the second time in their rematch. Nassa Bunjaku proved too strong against Brendan in a physical bout, winning on a point difference.

The second fight was electrifying with bone-crushing hits and high intensity that left everyone on the edge of their seats. Clinton faced a New Zealand fighter in a tough contest. Despite the height disadvantage, Clinton delivered a spirited fight. The fighters exchanged brutal punches and kicks until the final round, declaring both as winners.

In the main card of the fight, Kingston never knew who he would fight, as his opponent is known as one of the best karate fighters in the world, measuring 187cm compared to Kingston's 180cm. Kingston only had one international fight experience, but he put up a courageous fight.

The fight was rated as one of the best bouts of the night. Kingston has attracted the interest of both boxing and kickboxing promoters in Australia. With his controlled tactics and skills, he went to the final round of the contest. Though his opponent used his international experience to dominate the bout, Kingston performed exceptionally well.

Coach and retired world champion Stanley Nandex said after the launch of the professional development program in 2023, the fighters had made progress, transitioning from amateur to professional level, despite challenges.

“Due to a lack of funding, facilities, and equipment, it is still difficult to achieve what you really aim for,” said Nandex.

“Unfortunately, our fighters come from different provinces and settings. Comparing our fighters with internationally trained and professional fighters, we need to have the best to compete on that level. So, it's hard to achieve the result you expect.”

Nandex confirmed that the next event is set for 14 March 2026 in Sydney. Five fighters, comprising three males and two females, are preparing for the event.

While in the national circuit, preparations for ‘The Last Man Standing’ tournament will commence on 28 March 2026. This will also be part of the professional development initiatives, inviting 100 top fighters - both national and international champions from five different weight divisions - to battle and secure the top spot.

PNGKBF National Coordinator, Dr. Peter Lailai, announced that registration will open until 15 February 2026 to proceed with the draw. He has called on the fighters to contact the PNGKBF for their final registration.
