Mystics edged out Paramana with a 16-9 win to end Round 1 of the Port Moresby Netball Association (POMNA) Women’s Division 1 fixture on Saturday, 20 June 2026, at Rita Flynn Courts.
The Mystics women dominated the match, leading the opening quarter with 6-4 and increasing their lead to 8-4 at halftime.
After the break, they extended the advantage to 14-9. The final quarter was an arm wrestle, with Mystics scoring 2 goals to claim a dominant but low-scoring affair.
Player-coach Winnie Mavara stated that they fielded a young squad, creating opportunities for emerging players to step up to the challenge.
“Raka, Lua, and I were on the court to support the younger girls. We are trying to promote our young players, that’s why we brought in two U17 and two U21 players to help us,” she said.
“We hope that by playing with us, the senior players, it has given the young players confidence to be competitive in their divisions and make it up to the senior divisions.”
Coach Mavara mentioned that they would focus on their shooting skills, passing skills, and game management in the coming rounds.
Mavara explained that the club’s goal is to upskill the young players from all its divisions and give them confidence to lead the team, especially in the senior divisions.
The current Mystics’ players were crowned the champions of Division 2 last year and got promoted to Division 1 this year, setting their sights on another title.
The Mystics Netball Club competes in the premier and lower divisions of the Port Moresby Netball Association. The club fields multiple teams across the competition, ranging from the Premier Division down to Division 3.
Meanwhile, Round 2 of the capital city's thriving competition continues this weekend at the home of POMNA, the Rita Flynn Courts.
