The newly established Lae’s Morobe Great White Sharks Club was the only team from the ‘Industrial City’ to debut in the eighth edition of the Port Moresby Fisspotts Rugby Union Club Incorporation Charity event, which was hosted last Saturday, 16th August, 2025, at the Sir John Guise Stadium.
Representing ‘Rainy Lae’ for the first time to partake in the annual POM Fisspotts rugby 10s charity tournament staged in the nation’s capital, the former greats of Morobe Rugby Union (MRU) came to steal the title but missed out on competing in the finals.
The Morobe Great White Sharks Club was established this year by President Karo Kauna and his executive team, mainly consisting of former representative players for the Pukpuks, including the MRU legends.
President Kauna stated that they were happy to participate in the Fisspotts event, saying: “We just formed the team this year, trying to emulate what the Port Moresby Fisspotts Rugby Union Club Inc. is doing.
“We’ve organized the old boys from Morobe Rugby Union (MRU) to take part in this year’s Fisspotts 10s event. The whole idea is to build networks, bolster MRU, and do some community work by contributing to charity causes.”
Mr. Kauna acknowledged the Lae City Authority under the leadership of the local MP and Deputy Prime Minister, Honorable John Rosso, for his timely sponsorship to take part in the event, including other business houses for their support.
He also thanked the Port Moresby Fisspotts Rugby Union Club, led by President Jack Kariko and his executive team, extending his appreciation to the participating teams and looking forward to attending the event next year.
Despite not reaching the finals, the Morobe Great White Sharks Club walked away from the tournament with their heads held high, as they received K10,000 for Lae’s Angau General Hospital Children’s Ward, while the other K10,000 was given to the Kimbe Provincial Hospital Children’s Ward.
