Jonah Kautu Academy wraps up Phase One

The Jonah Kautu Academy (JKA) successfully completed the First Season of its Pikinini Rugby Program following ten weeks of engaging rugby union development activities for children in Port Moresby.

A small presentation was held on Saturday, June 6th, at Sir John Guise Stadium, officially concluding JKA's first season and recognizing kids who participated in the ten-week program. 

More than 100 children participated in the celebration, marking the successful completion of the JKA's season one. The festival featured a variety of fun games, skill challenges, and tag rugby matches, creating an exciting atmosphere for participants, families, and supporters.

As part of the celebrations, every participant received a commemorative medal in recognition of their commitment and participation throughout the program. 

In addition, 30 outstanding participants were recognized as top performers for demonstrating exceptional effort, attendance, attitude, sportsmanship, and skill development after the ten-week season.

Jonah Kautu, the founder of Jonah Kautu Academy, explained the programs they ran for ten weeks during the first part of the academy’s 2026 season.

“The program was designed to introduce young participants to rugby in a fun, safe, and inclusive environment,” he said.  

“Throughout the ten-week program, children were provided with age-appropriate coaching and development opportunities to build both their rugby skills and personal character.

“The program was delivered in two stages. During Weeks 1 to 5, participants focused on learning the fundamental skills of rugby, including passing, catching, movement, communication, and teamwork. 

“Weeks 6 to 10 allowed participants to put these learnings into practice through modified game situations, skill challenges, and tag rugby activities that encouraged decision-making, confidence, and enjoyment of the game.”

Mr. Kautu sincerely thanked all parents and guardians for their trust, belief, and confidence in allowing their children to participate in the academy’s program, and also extended his appreciation to the sponsors.

Kautu emphasized the success of the Pikinini Rugby Program, reflecting JKA's ongoing commitment to grassroots rugby development and youth engagement. The program continues to create positive pathways for children through sport while strengthening community connections and encouraging active lifestyles.

Season two of the Pikinini Rugby Program is scheduled to resume in July 2026, with Jonah Kautu Academy looking forward to welcoming returning participants and introducing more children to the game of rugby union.

Meanwhile, the Jonah Kautu Academy won the Community Sports Initiative of the Year during the 34th SP Sports Awards hosted on Saturday, May 30th, at the Crown Hotel, continuing its grassroots sports development and youth engagement initiatives.
