The Kumul Minerals Holdings Limited (KMHL) announced a K1.25 million sponsorship to the Basketball Federation of Papua New Guinea (BFPNG) yesterday (March 17th) at Tribes Coffee Club Cafe in Downtown, Port Moresby.
On behalf of the State Owned Enterprise, the KMHL Managing Director for External Affairs, Philip Manda, presented a K1.25m cheque to BFPNG President, David Peter and Patron, Charles Abel, witnessed by the executives and players of the federation.
This was the biggest funding allocation BFPNG has ever received from any sponsor or business house since its inception in 1963, signifying a historic sponsorship for the federation.
KMHL was the major sponsor of the All-Stars National Basketball Championship held in Goroka, Eastern Highlands Province, last December, and continued its sponsorship for BFPNG this year.
The K1.25m sponsorship package from KMHL will cover BFPNG’s National Championships and Regional Championships, thereby promoting and enhancing the development of basketball in Papua New Guinea.
Mr. Kanda said KMHL was honored to support BFPNG to elevate the standard of the code not just in Port Moresby, but across the country, emphasizing the importance of the partnership in unearthing raw talents.
“It is a significant moment for us at KMHL to collaborate with BFPNG to enhance the sporting landscape in our country,” Kanda stated.
“Basketball is deeply rooted in every village, church, school, and community, yet its talents remain untapped. We are thrilled to partner with BFPNG to nurture these talents.
“The Kumul Minerals Holdings Limited proudly takes on the role of becoming the major sponsor of basketball.”
Former Member of Parliament and Patron of BFPNG, Charles Abel, acknowledged KMHL’s steadfast commitment to supporting basketball and raising the standard of the sport locally and internationally.
“The backing and sponsorship provided by KMHL will not only propel PNG basketball on the global stage, but it will also significantly impact the local sports scene,” Abel said.
Basketball Federation of PNG President, David Peter, expressed his heartfelt gratitude and appreciation to KMHL for the sponsorship to develop basketball in the country, highlighting transparency as a cornerstone to this partnership.
“From the bottom of our hearts, I would like to thank the Kumul Minerals Holdings Limited for their support. We really appreciate this sponsorship and we will make sure to maintain that integrity and accountability through this partnership,” Peter said.
The K1.25m funding from KMHL will cover the costs of four significant basketball events this year, starting with the 3x3 Asia FIBA Cup, followed by the Pacific Mini Games, the FIBA Melanesian Cup, and the FIBA U17 Championships.
