The 2025 National Souths Basketball (NSBL) third-placed team, Honipolu Souths, went one step further in the 2026 edition to reach the grand final but lost to Kemele Mendi Menjals by 1 point (33-32) on Monday, May 18th, at Sir John Guise Stadium Indoor Complex.
Honipolu, a team from Samberigi in the Kagua-Erave District of Southern Highlands Province, was tipped as one of the championship heavyweights this year, given the caliber of players they had at their disposal.
The Honipolu girls finished in third place four times. However, they came out firing in the 2026 tournament and reached the big dance, but unfortunately, went down to the resilient Menjals' outfit.
Honipolu gave Kemele Mendi Menjals a run for their money in an intense women’s decider that capped off in a grandstand finish. Both teams went neck-and-neck in the opening quarter to the final whistle, with the Menjals pulling off a 1-point nail-biting win.
Despite the heartbreaking result, the Honipolu side held their heads high and remained hopeful about coming back strong in next year’s tournament to claim their first NSBL title.
Team leader Emily Lialu expressed her appreciation to the sponsors, her teammates, the coaching staff, team management, and the die-hard fans for their support in the four-day event.
“Firstly, I want to thank God for everything He has done for us, not just during the tournament but over the years. God gets all the praise, glory, and honor for everything that has happened,” Lialu said.
“A big thank you to brother Nelson Kopunye for the team's registration fee, Mr. Mano for the uniforms, Ms. Hetra for the drink money, and Elina Yala's husband for providing accommodation for us.
“To all my beautiful sisters, for the love of basketball, we played our hearts out to reach the grand final but fell short. Reaching the grand final is already an achievement for the team, so I’m proud of you all.
“Finishing 3rd place in four consecutive years and making it to the final this year is not a bad result. I take my hat off to you all, especially the players.
“Thank you, everyone, for your contribution in cash or kind. We truly appreciate your support. May God bless you all in your future endeavors.”
Honipolu now looks forward to participating in the Port Moresby Elite Basketball (PEB), which will tip off on Sunday, May 24th, at Sir John Guise Stadium Indoor Complex.
