Kapuls Edge Vanuatu to Claim Second MSG PM’s Title

Updated: Dec 24, 2024

The PNG Kapuls have reclaimed their second Melanesian Spearhead Group (MSG) Prime Minister's Cup a year later following their gritty 2-1 victory over Vanuatu in the decider on Saturday, December 21st, 2024, at the National Stadium in Honiara, Solomon Islands.

The Kapuls have had a strong campaign in this third edition of the MSG PM’s Cup, recording three wins and a tie, and marched to the big dance to clinch the coveted trophy. PNG became the inaugural champions of the MSG PM’s Cup in 2022 and one year later, they reclaimed the prestigious silverware.

After a disappointing performance in the 2024 FIFA Oceania Qualifiers hosted in Port Moresby in November, the Kapuls regrouped and redeemed themselves, mending their broken hearts and walking away with the MSG Cup for the second time.

Just under 13 minutes of play, Rex Naime made a perfect cross-field cheap kick to Ati Kepo, who headed the ball to find the back of the net. The ensuing plays were a seesawing contest, where both sides fought hard to open up the game but to no avail, leaving the half-time score at 1-0.

The arm wrestle continued in the second half until the 58th minute, Ati Kepo placed a long-range kick, which deflected off the Solomon Islands’ defender and veteran talisman, Raymond Gunemba dribbled the loose ball to net the second goal for the visitors.

Unfazed by the lead, Vanuatu held their composure and mounted pressure on PNG. Through their relentless and determined efforts, they finally broke the deadlock and scored a consolation goal through Jean Kaltak in the 84th minute, ending the big dance on a bittersweet note.

Former PNG international and Hekari United FC stalwart, coach David Muta heaped praise on the Kapuls for their commitment and pride in representing the nation well by clinching the 2024 MSG PM’s Cup.

Muta also acknowledged the contributions of head coach Felipe Vega-Arango and thanked the PNG Football Association under the leadership of President John Kapi Natto, including the loyal support from the fans that lifted the spirits of the players to bag the trophy.

Meanwhile, the PNG Kapuls will host the fourth edition of the revamped Melanesian Spearhead Group Prime Minister's Cup in Port Moresby in 2025.
