The SP PNG Hunters recorded their maiden win after thumping the Western Clydesdales with a commanding 38-14 scoreline in round 3 of the Queensland Hostplus Cup on Sunday, 22 March 2026, at Toowoomba Sports Ground in Toowoomba, Australia.
The Hunters went full steam ahead in the opening 2 minutes, with fullback Sanny Wabo scoring the first 4-pointer and Douglas David registering the second try in the 4th minute. Trevor Solu converted the two goals, giving the Hunters a 12-0 lead.
The Clydesdales responded in the 13th minute through Peter Gubb, reducing the margin to 8 points. However, the celebration was short-lived as the Hunters quickly swung the momentum, with Joel Gena and Benji Kot scoring a try each and putting the Hunters ahead 24-4 at half-time.
After the break, the home side quickly scored back-to-back tries through Denzel Burns and Christopher Woodbridge, putting the Hunters under the pump. However, the visitors regrouped and dominated the contest, with Bruce Bawase, Joel Gena, and Lynchill Kiap sealing the deal.
With this much-needed victory, the SP Brewery-sponsored outfit anticipates tasting consecutive wins when they travel to Redcliffe to face the Dolphins in round 4 of the Hostplus Cup on Saturday, 28 March, at Kayo Stadium.
