The PNG Hekari FC bagged their first 3 competition points after pulling off a 3-1 victory against Vanuatu United in the Oceania Football Confederation (OFC) Professional League Round 3 match on Saturday, 28 February 2026, at the Home of the Matildas in Melbourne, Australia.
Coming into the match on the back of two consecutive wins, Vanuatu anticipated continuing their third straight victory, but the determined Hekari side rose to the challenge and stunned the Chiefs, registering their first win in the competition.
Vanuatu started confidently and controlled much of the opening period, with their effort being rewarded in the 30th minute when William Cardona delivered a dangerous ball into the box from the right side, which ricocheted off the goalkeeper, and Bill Kaltack reacted quickly to finish from close range.
However, the lead was short-lived as Hekari responded following an unfortunate deflection from a defensive block, allowing Joseph Joe to equalize the margin, leaving the halftime score at 1–1.
Vanuatu had a golden opportunity to regain the advantage early in the second half. However, Hekari capitalized on a turnover in the midfield and scored from a quick attacking move, with Rex Naime scoring his first goal.
Despite Hekari being down with one man after Ati Kep was red-carded in stoppage time, Vanuatu were caught on the counter-attack and veteran campaigner Raymond Gunemba scored the third goal to seal the deal with a gritty win.
With a much-needed win on their back, the PNG Hekari FC now shift their focus to meet Tahiti United on Tuesday, March 3rd.
