The PNG Hekari FC departed for Melbourne today (February 19th) ahead of the Oceania Football Confederation (OFC) Professional League Round 3, which resumes on Saturday, 21 February 2026, after a short break.
The third round of the Pro League competition will see the eight teams compete across 15 matches at two venues in Melbourne - The Home of the Matildas and Olympic Village from February 21st to March 4th.
Languishing at the bottom of the ladder and desperate to break their losing streak, Hekari did a soul-searching after hosting the second round, showing optimism to taste their first win of the season.
Following a tumultuous start, coach Jerry Allen stated that they have a big task ahead of them as they chase their first victory in Melbourne, putting his trust and confidence in the players to step up.
“We have worked really hard after round 2. We know it will be difficult in Melbourne, but we are searching for our first win. That’s the mentality and spirit right now. Out of the 4 games, we need to get a win,” he said.
He emphasized discipline: “For the past two weeks, we have worked on game organization, especially discipline. We have realized that our weakness is after 90 minutes, so we have worked on that.”
In addition, senior player Raymond Gunemba said they did not perform well in the opening round in Auckland, but showed significant improvement in round 2 in Port Moresby.
“After the first circuit, we have built confidence and improved our performance in circuit 2. Going to Melbourne, we are looking forward to a win. That’s our aim. At least we get one or two wins to help our campaign,” he pointed out.
Gunemba added that blending a young side with a few experienced players has been a challenge in terms of team chemistry, but he noted that they are slowly building a good combination.
The talisman stressed that they have a good side, encouraging his teammates to have trust and confidence in their abilities to overcome nervousness while on the field.
Potent forward Ati Kepo admitted that when he got red-carded in round 1 and was suspended for 3 matches, he had put a lot of burden on the team. However, Kepo said he is working hard to stay calm on the field and help Hekari secure their first win.
Coach Allen confirmed that they would not make any changes, with the team looking fresh and ready to secure an elusive 3 competition points when they face off against the Solomon Kings on Sunday (February 22nd).
