Hekari down Wawens to register two straight wins

The Hekari United FC edged the FC Morobe Wawens with a 1-0 victory to record two consecutive wins in the Premier Soccer League (PSL) round 4 fixture on Saturday, July 5th, 2025, at PNG Football Stadium in Port Moresby.

Hekari had a bye in the opening round and suffered a 0-1 loss to the Lae City FC in round 2 but rebounded in rounds 3 and 4 against the Port Moresby Strikers FC and FC Morobe Wawens, showcasing their championship pedigree.

A very physical and intense first half saw Hekari and the Wawens struggle to open up the game, despite goal-scoring opportunities being created for both teams. A 45-minute slugfest contest left the score at 0-0.  

Just ten minutes into the second half, Hekari scored the first goal to put themselves on the front foot. Wawens had a few chances to level the game, but the rejuvenated Hekari outfit defended their lead to shatter the Bob Morris-coached men.

Hekari coach Jerry Allen was pleased with the win, giving credit to the Wawens for delivering a competitive match against the MRDC-backed team.

“I would like to thank the Wawens for a good game today. They played really well. It was a very tough game,” Allen credited the Morobean franchise.

“To be honest, it was an equal contest, but we made use of our chances to score the winning goal.”

Nathaniel Eddie scored a match-winner to push the back-to-back champions (2023-2024) on top of the ladder as they set their sights on defending the title and making a three-peat. 

The high-flying Hekari United FC anticipate registering three consecutive wins on the trot when they host the Star Mountain FC in the PSL round 5 clash at PNG Football Stadium on Saturday, July 12th.
