Gurias Edge Wigmen

A late try by rugby union convert William Tirang in the shadows of full-time, played a pivotal role for the ENB Agmark Gurias’ gritty 10-8 victory over the Kroton Hela Wigmen in round 7 of the Digicel-ExxonMobil Cup on Sunday, May 25, 2025, at Santos National Football Stadium.

The Gurias started the game strongly when the eventual player of the match Kitron Laka crossed over the line in the 10th minute. Fullback Konnie Bernard failed to convert, leaving the score at 4-0.

After 15 minutes of intense battle, the Wigmen hit back on the corner through Siki Konden. Half-back Lote Kuman could not nail the extras, locking the scores at 4-4 in the break.

The points were hard to come by in the second half due to silly errors and ill-discipline from both sides. Bernard slotted one penalty goal for the Gurias while the Wigmen converted two goals to take an 8-6 lead.

As the clock ticked down with the game hanging in the balance, the Agmark-backed outfit executed a second-man play to send winger William Tirang on the corner, shattering the hearts of the valiant Wigmen.

The Gurias registered their back-to-back wins to keep their finals hopes alive while the Wigmen will look to bounce back in round 8.

Former Kumul and Gurias’ rookie coach Wartovo Puara Jr noted the team’s confidence and combination, crediting their resolute defense.

“Playing against the Wigmen, they are a good team. It’s always tough playing against the Wigmen,” Puara said.

“For us, it’s about building our confidence and the way we play. There were plenty of errors and penalties, but it was good to get the win.

“Our defense in particular was really good. I think our defense won us the game.”

It was a tough outing for the East New Britain men, and coach Puara Jr said there was more work to be done before they were considered premiership contenders.

The ENB Agmark Gurias will leave for Eastern Highlands to meet the Bintangor Goroka Lahanis while the Kroton Hela Wigmen will fly to Morobe’s capital to face the Lae Snax Tigers in round 8 of the DEM Cup.
