Tenza: stick to the process

The SP PNG Hunters have commenced their 2026 Queensland Hostplus Cup campaign on a horror start, recording a single win, suffering four losses, and sitting second last on the ladder after round 5.

The Hunters started poorly last year, registering only one win and four defeats, but peaked in the middle of the season, reaching the playoffs and being eliminated in the first week of the finals.

The SP Brewery-sponsored club replicated last year’s performance in the early rounds of the 2026 season. However, they have shown signs of improvement in the last few games, hoping to end the losing streak.

Hunters’ assistant coach Wesser Tenza stressed that it is frustrating to lose consecutive games, but they need to stick together as a team to win games.

“It has been tough for us, but we know that these boys have what it takes to be in the Hunters,” Tenza said.

“To win games, it comes back to us as a whole, including the players, trainers, coaching staff, and management.

“We have been emphasizing individual preparation. We can give so much, but it’s up to the boys to prepare individually and give their best every game.

Tenza added that they need to stick to the basics, saying: “We focus on little areas and try to be better in defense, ruck area, in the middle, and on the edges.”

The spine has been under scrutiny, with the fans raising eyebrows on the experienced half-back Jamie Mavoko, but Tenza has defended the playmaker.

“Jamie has been with us for a few years and has a lot of experience to guide the team,” he said.

“We have some young halves coming up, but they still have some things to work on before they play for the Hunters.

“Up there (Queensland Cup) is another level altogether, so the emerging playmakers need to tick all the boxes to play in such a tough competition.”

With round 6 being themed as “Anti-Violence Round”, Tenza said it’s a special round, and they hope to win on home soil and dedicate the win to the fans, especially young girls and mothers.

“This weekend is an important round for us, not only for the game but also for the supporters. It’s important that the game is played in the true spirit of violence against women,” he said

“Violence is a big issue in the country, so my message to the players and fans is to take care of yourself, do what is right, and stay out of trouble.”

The assistant coach revealed that the round 5 lineup has remained unchanged, except for one change, with Himson Ulalom being dropped and Jacob Lot getting promoted to the starting 17.

The PNG Hunters will host the table-topping Ipswich Jets in round 6 of the QRL Hostplus Cup on Saturday, 18 April 2026, at Santos National Football Stadium in Port Moresby.
