The AVE Rugby League Club (RLC) clinched the 2026 Justin Tkatchenko Super 9s tournament after defeating the resilient Koboni side with a 41-31 win on Friday, April 10th, at Kaugere’s Moresby South Stadium.
It was a high-scoring affair, where the AVE RLC led the contest 17-14 at half-time and defended their lead in the second half with a 41-31 margin, walking away with the title and K50,000 prize money.
Banking on the experience of senior players led by skipper Thomas Kaikai, Cyril Seiba, Joshua Winnie, Graham Sinori, Junior Bobby, and Andrew Solo, the AVE team proved their dominance to claim the JT 9s tournament.
Coach Don Pio was overwhelmed with the result, reflecting on the club’s turbulent times and how far they have come, attributing the team’s success to their faith.
“Firstly, I want to say a big thank you to our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, for always being the center of our team throughout all the tournaments we take part in. Nothing would be possible without Jesus, so all the glory goes back to Him always,” he said.
“We waited five years to win the JT Super 9s tournament, which is the biggest event in the National Capital District. If you win this tournament, you can call yourself the best in the big city.”
Winning the 10th anniversary of the annual event was the cherry on top, with the coach describing the feeling as special and memorable.
“This year is special because it was the 10th anniversary of the tournament, and we won it. It was a collective team effort from the players to management, supporters, and sponsors,” Pio said.
Mr. Pio acknowledged the players and their families, the sponsors, the fans, and the organizing committee of the JT 9s tournament for hosting a successful event.
“I want to thank our sponsors, Express Customs Ltd and Peyo Investment, for their support. Thank you for always supporting us. We appreciate the support,” he expressed.
“Also, a big thank you to my family, especially my parents, for always helping when I’m in need. Thank you to my in-laws and sisters for cooking and washing my clothes, including the team's jerseys.
“Biggest thank you goes to my big brother, Clement, and his crew. They play the biggest part in the team that people don’t see, but our players see. He managed the logistics, catering, medicals, and game-day setup, ensuring that everything runs smoothly and I focus on the game.
“Lastly, I want to say a big thank you to brother Solien Bagelo and the JT 9s officials. It was a hard road for us in the finals, but we brushed it off and played footy, and at the end of the day, rugby league won, and that is all that matters.”
AVE RLC made the Cup final in 2022 but lost to Waidex. Three years later, they regrouped and came firing on all cylinders to claim the elusive silverware. The AVE women’s team was also crowned the champions, ending the JT 9s tourney on a high note.
