The Gulf Komara FC clinched the first-ever Futsal competition, which was sanctioned by the Papua New Guinea Football Association (PNGFA) this year.
After 18 competitive rounds between 10 clubs, the Gulf Komara FC maintained their position on the ladder, capping off the season with 49 points and claiming the inaugural title.
No grand final was held to determine the winner, but Komara were awarded the trophy according to the points accumulated. Hekari United FC finished second on 43 points, followed by KopR8 on 41 points.
The champions (Komara) walked away with K5,000 and the cup, while Hekari received K3,000 and KopR8 scooped K2,000, ending the small presentation on a positive note.
With the inclusion of beach soccer and futsal, the PNG Football Association aims to develop these two codes and lift their standards in the coming years alongside the Premier Soccer League, Women’s Conference League, and Youth competition.
PNGFA President John Kapi Natto congratulated the Gulf Komara FC for winning the maiden title, extending his appreciation to other participating clubs and sponsors for making this season a success.
Gulf Komara FC coach David Aua credited his men, saying before the futsal code was introduced in the country, Komara had already played the indoor game some years ago.
“I’m overwhelmed and really proud of the effort by the boys. Our journey started seven years ago when we introduced futsal into our training program. The fruit of that is shown today by lifting the futsal cup,” Aua said.
Komara will represent PNG and compete in the 2025 OFC Men’s Futsal Champions League scheduled for 17-22 November in Suva, Fiji.
“Now that the competition is over, we are going to prepare for the OFC Champions League in Fiji. Obviously, it’s going to be a big challenge, considering it’s our first time, but I’m sure we have the team to go and do well,” Aua said.
