Gerehu Firelight 7s Tourney Set to Host Final Leg

The inaugural Gerehu Firelight 7s Tournament, initiated by Rawali Bokuik and the MBB Marlins Rugby Union Club, staged the first leg of the 7s series from November 2-3, concluded the second leg from November 23-24, and anticipates to hold the third leg from December 13-15.

MBB Marlins Rugby Union Club is a franchise from the Gerehu suburb that participates in the Capital Rugby Union (CRU) competition. The club has U20, A Grade, and Premier Grade teams competing in the CRU competition.

According to the Tournament Director, Rawali Bokuik, the main objective of hosting the 7s series was to keep the youths engaged, creating a platform for the raw talents to expose their skills and enjoy the sport of rugby union.

Director Bokuik mentioned that the last time such a tournament was hosted in Gerehu was almost a decade ago, so they wanted to revive the suburban league and bring the community together to support the 7s series.

“The last time rugby union was played here (Gerehu) was 12 years ago. As a club (MBB Marlins) that has been participating in the CRU competition for the last seven years, we thought this is the next step forward for us to start running an annual 7s tournament,” Bokuik said.

“There’s so much talent here in Gerehu, so we are trying to capture those raw talents by hosting the 7s series. It’s going to be an annual event showcasing the best rugby union talents living in the Gerehu suburb.”

The registration is open and will be closed this weekend, with a total of 24 men’s teams to battle it out in the third leg of the inaugural 7s tournament. The participating teams are prepared to battle for supremacy.

Mr. Bokuik said the first and second legs of the Gerehu Firelight 7s tournament have been concluded successfully, so they now look forward to staging the final leg of the 7s series at the Sir John Guise Stadium from December 13-15, 2024.
