Capital Rugby Union (CRU) back-to-back premiers, the SWG TSI Valley Hunters, pulled off a gutsy 15-0 win against the determined Moni Plus Nova in round 2 of the Premier Men’s game on Saturday, 9 May 2026, at Bava Park.
Coming off a bye, the Valley Hunters fielded a mix of last season’s players and newcomers, testing out their new combinations as they aim to defend their title for a third consecutive year.
A bruising and physical first half saw the reigning champions (Valley Hunters) score an unconverted try, leading the contest 5-0 at the break. The intensity grew in the second half, with the Hunters scoring two tries to ice the game.
All men’s teams participating in the premier division are hungry to play against the Valley Hunters to test their premiership credentials this season, who have been a force to be reckoned with in the last two seasons.
Coach Frank Genia noted that though he expected more from his men, he was happy that they got the job done to start their 2026 campaign on a high note and praised Nova’s courageous effort.
“Still very early in the season and there’s lots to improve on, but it was good to kick off the season with a win formally,” Genia said.
“We were a bit scrappy with our attacking options. Credit to Nova’s defence, who managed to shut down some of our attacking raids.
“A few dropped balls as well stopped some opportunities we created, but that comes with the emotions of the first game of the season after a long pre-season, and the nervous energy the boys had.
“But I’m happy with some of the systems we are implementing. Keeping Nova scoreless while having 2 yellow cards was pleasing.”
Coach Genia admitted that with the inclusion of new players, it will take some time for the boys to gel and build their combinations.
“We have a new group this year. It’s a new year and a new challenge in front of us,” he explained.
“The combinations are building well. There are some teething issues, but we will work through them.
“It’s more around getting an understanding of our systems and building our game profile around that.”
