Dwellers down Komara

The Lae City Dwellers emerged victorious after holding off the Gulf Komara FC with a 2-1 scoreline in Round 2 of the Premier Soccer League (PSL) today (June 3rd) at PNG Football Stadium in Port Moresby.

Starting their campaign with a loss to Admiralty Islands FC in the season opener last Saturday (May 30th), the Dwellers came prepared to upset the defending champions (Komara) on their turf.

Having the advantage of the wind at their back in the first half, the Morobeans capitalized on that to score the first goal from Spencer Giwisa. However, in the final quarter of the match, Komara bagged an equalizer through Jacob Sabua, tying the scores at 1-1 in the breather.

At the resumption, the visitors quickly registered their second goal through the opening scorer Spencer Giwisa. The match turned into a slugfest affair after Giwisa’s double. Komara nearly forced a draw in the dying seconds, but the Dwellers held on to taste their first win.

Lae City Dwellers coach Peter Gunemba said he was proud of his boys, praising the players for their resilience against the red-hot Komara outfit in Port Moresby’s sweltering heat.

“First of all, I would like to thank God for the victory. Without Him, it would not be possible for us to win today’s game against Komara,” Gunemba said.

“It was a tough game. We knew that we would be playing the current champions (Komara), so we came prepared and gave them a good game. I am very proud of the boys.

“It was unfortunate that we lost last week as a result of playing with 10 men for 70 minutes, but it was good to get the 3 points today. I saw their resilience and told the boys that we would come back strong, and today was the result of that mindset.”

He admitted that they would not rest on their laurels, as they have so many areas to work on to prepare themselves for Round 3.

The coach also credited Spencer Giwisa, who scored 2 goals and helped the Lae City Dwellers rebound in winning ways.
