The SP PNG Hunters’ booming back-rower, Whallan Tau-Loi, was in career-best form in the QRL Hostplus Cup last year, but he had succumbed to an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury in the preseason.
After undergoing rehabilitation for six months, Tau-Loi has hit the paddock again last week, plying his trade in the Digicel-ExxonMobil Cup with the PRK Gulf Isou and hoping to secure his spot in the Hunters.
The Central man made his debut for the Hunters in 2023 and cemented his spot in the starting lineup, recording 26 appearances under his belt and registering 7 tries. He was in his peak until the ACL injury disrupted his blossoming career.
Tau-Loi mentioned that it had not been easy for him during the recovery period, but through his faith and family’s words of encouragement, he was able to pull through the situation and is prepared to make his mark again.
“I’ve been through rehab for eight months, but it’s really exciting to be back. It’s been challenging and tough at times, but I’m just trying to turn up with the right attitude and mindset to deliver each session,” he said.
“I would like to thank God for giving me strength each day, including my family’s support, especially my wife and kids. They (wife and kids) are the reason why I turn up each day to give my best.”
He also acknowledged the medical team for guiding him during his recovery process and extended his appreciation to the Hunters’ coaching staff, including the management, for their support and advice.
The soft-spoken back-rower will play for the Gulf Isou in the DEM Cup to pick up his match fitness and hopefully make his way back to the Hunters in the coming weeks. It’s been a challenging journey for Whallan Tau-Loi, but he remains optimistic about regaining his form.
