FC Morobe Wawens pulled off a boilover 1-0 victory over the invincible Gulf Komara FC in round 9 of the Premier Soccer League (PSL) today (August 9th) at PNG Football Stadium in Port Moresby, giving the PRK-sponsored club their first loss of the season.
Komara have been a force to be reckoned with this season following their unbeaten record and topping the standings. However, the Wawens came with a purpose and gave the competition leaders a run for their money, ending their perfect winning streak.
This fixture shaped up to be a one-sided affair, but the Morobean lads rose to the challenge to match the might of the table-toppers, deadlocking the score at nil-all in the first 45 minutes of the seesawing contest.
The arm wrestling continued in the second stanza as both sides fought for ball possession and field territory to open up the game. With a little bit of momentum on their back, the Rudolph Fred-coached outfit capitalized to stun the Komara on their turf.
Wawens’ coach Rudolph Fred credited the players for their gutsy win, stating: “I was impressed with the performance of the boys. They played really well according to our game plan, and we became victorious.
“To play Gulf Komara, it’s a tough team to beat because they are at the top of the ladder with zero losses and one draw. For us, we prepared ourselves to play this game, which was really tough, but we did our best to beat them.”
Despite defeating the red-hot Komara side, coach Fred admitted that there are a lot of areas they need to work on, especially their game coordination, combination, and finishing off every match strongly.
In addition, the coach extended his appreciation to the club’s Port Moresby-based fans for their support. He also acknowledged the club’s major sponsor, Ngip Agmark Ltd, and dedicated the win to the Wawens’ Director, Andrew Namis.
With this crucial upset triumph against the undefeated Gulf Komara FC, the FC Morobe Wawens look forward to hosting the United Highlands FC in PSL’s round 10 fixture at Lae’s PNGFA Academy.
