Wanderers Hockey Club Claim 8th Consecutive Title

ree

The Wanderers Hockey Club clinched its eighth straight premiership title after edging the Coastal 8s with a hard-fought 1-0 win in the Port Moresby Women’s Premier Grade Grand Final on Sunday, 2nd November 2025, at Sir John Guise Stadium Hockey Pavilion.

Coastal 8s, who made their first grand final appearance in the senior women’s division, rose to the challenge and almost pulled off an upset against the seasoned grand final regulars (Wanderers).

A very competitive and seesawing first half saw both sides find it hard to open up the game, despite a couple of chances being created for either team to break the deadlock, leaving the match nil all at the interval.

As the arm wrestle continued in the second stanza, the Wanderers’ experience came to the fore, with the reigning champions scoring a clutch-winning field goal to ice the game in a nail-biting finish.

The Wanderers women have set a benchmark by snatching eight consecutive premierships, with the player-coach Vagi Boga Pomoso expressing satisfaction.

“It feels good. We're the pride of our club. We've always been humble, and we remind ourselves to respect the opposition going into every game we play,” she said.

“Knowing that we've been able to enter the 8th consecutive grand finals and leave a legacy as the 'Turf Queens' is truly humbling for us, but it also speaks volumes about the caliber of players in our team.”

Mrs. Pomoso mentioned that despite a turbulent season, the eight-time champions found their groove in the middle of the year to stamp their authority once again.

She also acknowledged God for bringing the team this far, and extended the club’s gratitude to the players and their families, including the loyal fans, for their support.

Since the club’s inception in the competition in 2016, the Wanderers have been a force to be reckoned with, especially in the women’s division, making consistent appearances in the finals from 2016 to 2025.

During their foundation year in 2016, the Wanderers women’s team had a very strong season and made their presence known. They marched to the semi-final but bowed out of the race gracefully that year.

The following year (2017), the ramblers redeemed themselves by defeating Sunam and bagging their first championship, which started the club’s consecutive premiership success.

The juggernauts of the synthetic turf maintained their excellent championship victory from 2018 to 2019, beating the Blades side in those two deciders and continuing their dominance.

However, the global COVID-19 pandemic disrupted everything in 2020. After a two-year break, the Wanderers picked up their impressive form and reached the decider, beating Sunam in the shootouts in 2022.

In 2023, the Wanderers edged the Seagulls in hockey 5s and maintained their championship run from 2024 and 2025, following two decisive victories over Sunam and Coastal 8s, solidifying their status as the supreme ‘Turf Queens’.
