The Port Moresby Hockey Association (PMHA) continued its round 2 games at the Sir John Guise Stadium Hockey Pavilion on Saturday, July 5th, 2025, following the conclusion of its round 1 games last weekend (June 29).
This season features a 30-team competition comprising A and B Grades, with 10 participating clubs. The senior men’s and women’s divisions consist of 8 teams each, including 6 teams each from B Grade, with the finals to be held in October.
Last season, nine regular clubs registered their teams to participate in the competition, but this year, one team from Lae has joined the competition. The 9 teams are Port Moresby-based, while the new entrant is from Morobe’s capital.
With seven rounds to go before the finals, President Kawetan Pokiap mentioned that the participating teams had brought their game to another level, aiming to secure a spot in the top 4 playoffs.
“Today is the opening round of the Port Moresby Hockey Association’s round 2 games. We ended round 1 last weekend (June 29),” President Pokiap said.
“As we are heading close to the finals, the teams have lifted their performances and become competitive. It’s a very intense competition this year compared to last year.
“All the teams have really improved, and we have seen the young players pick up very quickly from last year because the clubs are delivering good training and development for their players.
“We are looking forward to the second round being more intense and physical than the first round, and anticipating our finals in October.”
Mr. Pokiap revealed that the PMHA would host the National Capital District Hockey Tournament in August, with selections to be made for the Juniors, Seniors, Masters, and Veterans. Two hockey tournaments will run concurrently, featuring the Juniors and the Seniors.
After the NCD tournament, the cream of the crop will be selected to represent NCD in the National Championship, and the National Team will be selected to prepare for upcoming international events.
