The Port Moresby Vipers made their presence known in the 2026 Nines Premier League (NPL) tournament hosted from January 24-25 on the Gold Coast in Australia.
Vipers had an impressive outing in the two-day event, winning three straight games and topping their pool. They, however, lost to Legacy in the quarterfinals. Legacy was the same team that defeated the Vipers in the Plate Semifinals last year.
The NCD flagship team made its debut in the NPL tournament in 2025, making a quick impact in the event. Despite the result, the Vipers continued to show promise each year in the tournament.
Led by co-coaches Brandon Gotuno and Wellington Albert, the team fielded a mix of experienced campaigners and emerging talent, including newcomers like Jeremiah Ben, Terence Wemin, and Ishmael Vaieke.
The tournament featured former NRL players and rising talents, creating an opportunity for the PNG boys to compete at an international level and establishing relationships with other athletes.
The fast-paced, family-friendly 9-a-side rugby league festival lived up to its expectations, connecting grassroots players and entertaining the fans.
The Vipers’ 20-man squad will return to Port Moresby tomorrow. They will resume their preseason training as they look forward to the 2026 Digicel-ExxonMobil Cup (DEM Cup), scheduled to kick off on April 11.
