The Moni Plus NCDC Port Moresby Vipers left for Australia today (22 January 2026) to participate in the Nines Premier League (NPL) tournament, scheduled for January 24-25 on the Gold Coast.
The National Capital District flagship team (Vipers) made their debut in the NPL tournament last year, performing beyond expectations and bowing out gracefully in the semifinals.
A 20-man squad traveled to Down Under to compete against 15 other worthy opponents in 'The Glitter Strip', with $50,000 prize money up for grabs.
The players were selected through the club’s academy, NCD Governor’s Cup, and suburban competitions, bringing youth, experience, and flair to the squad.
Among the experienced players from last year, the Vipers scouted promising talents, such as Jeremiah Ben and Terence Wemin, to name a few.
The Port Moresby Vipers coach, Wellington Albert, said the team had prepared well for over two months, with the squad comprising old faces and newcomers, and they are looking forward to the challenge.
This tournament creates an opportunity for local players to experience international competition and build networks and relationships with other athletes.
Interestingly, former NRL players like Jarryd Hayne, Jordan Rapana, Andrew Fifita, Bryce Cartwright, and others will play for their respective teams.
The two-day NPL tournament promises to deliver entertaining, high-intensity matches that will leave the fans on the edge of their seats.
NPL is a fast-paced, family-friendly rugby league festival that connects grassroots players and fans to the elite level of the game.
