Special Olympics PNG kick off first activity for 2026

The Special Olympics Papua New Guinea (SOPNG) kicked off its first Volunteers Batch III Training on Saturday, 14 February 2026, at Sir John Guise Stadium.

The event brought together 50 participants, including 28 youths and 22 athlete leaders, for a three-day capacity-building training aimed at strengthening inclusion through sports and various activities designed to equip participants with the skills, knowledge, and understanding necessary for effectively carrying out their roles within the SOPNG program.

SOPNG Clinical Director, Dr. Andrew Ame, emphasized during the presentation the critical role volunteers play in ensuring the health and wellness of athletes during competitions. He highlighted the importance of safeguarding athletes and promoting a safe and supportive sporting environment.

Teacher and head coach Jenny Sike facilitated a session on basic sign language, an essential communication tool when engaging with athletes who may be deaf and non-verbal.

Other presenters included youth leaders Epago Madu, Jeremiah Elijah, and Boniewe Goreo, as well as athlete leaders, Pauline Paul and Japhet Narrey.

SOPNG thanked the parents, guardians, siblings, and teachers for their support toward the athletes, acknowledging their contributions, commitment, and dedication to the program.
